I was eager to see if when I continued reading the next day, if it will be also as exciting, it was till the end.You will live the events of those days, the Ottoman art of war compared to the Europeans, the manufacturing of cannons, the logistics, army composition, new warfare guns and first use of Cannon battery formations for the first time in history, and their effect in the thousand years old walls of Constantinople, this vivid city that was in decline and disintegration which led to its defeat.The book is so eventful that it is impossible to put down!

So often it's hard, especially in the time period in question and when dealing with conflicts involving major world religions, to find a book that is completely unbiased in it's reporting of the subject matter. This book and this author are the exception to that rule. That to begin with was what I enjoyed about this book. Mr. Crowley's position on the subject at hand is that of objective reporter of historical events. There is no personal or religious/Western bias of any kind (Not that I know anything of his personal beliefs) in this book or any sense that Mr. Crowley belongs to a "side" in the subject matter.As for the subject matter itself, the book starts as a general overview of the emergence of Islam, it's conquest of the Arab world and it's previous conflicts with the Byzantines. It then generally covers the Byzantines history in the area over the previous 400 years and the way thier policies and mutual interactions led up the events to be covered.The bulk of the book is a straight forward military history of the battle and the seige, covering historical documents as well as personal accounts of the battle from individuals who fought it. It covers the blood and guts details that you would expect to find in a medieval battle, detailing atrocieties committed with no attempt to whitewash or excuse, but also no attempt to judge from a modern perspective. All in all, one of the most enjoying and easy to read books I've read in some time.

A superbly written account of the fall of Christian Constantinople to the Muslims in AD 1453. Constantinople was chosen by the Roman Emperor Constantine as his new Christian capital in AD 324. The city was situated on a triangular piece of land, surrounded on 2 sides by water. One current was too swift to allow ships to land and besiege the city. A massive chain blocked passage across the other waterway. The city's land side was protected by a wall with towers, first built by Anthemius in AD 413. When it collapsed after an earthquake, 16,000 citizens rebuilt the wall in only 2 months, adding a 2nd wall with towers and a moat.Constantinople stood as a Christian city for over 1,000 years and was virtually impregnable to attack as long as siege equipment was limited to the power of catapults. Mehmet II was the 21-year old sultan of the Ottoman Empire. With gunpowder, massive canons, and perhaps 50,000 to 80,000 troops, he besieged the walls with constant bombardments, always with heavy losses. His sappers attempted to dig tunnels under the walls to make them collapse, but they were repelled by Greek fire when the defenders placed bowls of water on the ground and located the digging through telltale ripples. During the day, the defenders pushed ladders off the walls, hurled down rocks and fire and hot oil on attackers, and shot bullets and arrows into the enemy. At night, the Turks would go forward to gather their wounded and dead. The defenders would go out to repair walls.The city was defended by the courageous Constantine XI and no more than 8,000 soldiers. During the final assault, Mehmet had only one body of fresh troops left. The Greeks were led by Constantine himself, and the Italians by Giovanni Giustiniani, a noble of Genoa, who voluntarily fought “for the advantage of the Christian faith” and who was utterly tireless and skillful in his defense of the walls.After Constantinople fell, it rejuvenated Islam to continue its jihad into the West. And the West was left to consider how its infighting and disunity helped lead to the fall of their great city. The author is an historian and researcher of the highest order, and an exceptionally engaging writer.

As somebody who enjoys reading about this era and ottoman history in particular this book was a godsend. Mr Crowley has such a massive talent for writing in way that is a pleasure to read but also very scholarly. I liked how Crowley tried to be as objective as possible and not take sides during the siege. He paints the whole picture showing the good and bad on both sides. This was one of the most important moments in all of history and I couldn't think of somebody better to write about it.

Although the book is technically well written, it approaches being a Muslim apologetic. Crowley all but ignores the impact of the of the Latin sack of the City in the 13th century and the devastating consequences of the Great Schism while at the same time down playing the "Holy War" aspects of Mehmet conquest. Finally, the author's contempt for Greeks is palpable, to his disgrace.

Absolutely riveting story of the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed the Conqueror. Crowley explains the dispute between the churches in Rome and Constantinople, the influence of trade and money (powerhouse Venice's decision not to intervene on behalf of Byzantium after hints from Sultan Mehmed that they would not lose their enclave in the new Istanbul), the genius of Mehmed in organizing his logistics and lines of communication prior to the invasion, and the touch-and-go campaign that saw morale changing on both sides on a daily basis.A must-read book.

Sort of useful but I think that this was the book that had some incorrect answers for the practice test in the back. There is no one book that will help you pass the test. I read parts of a lot of different books, searched the internet, and attended a class put on by the Board of Pharmacy for the state I live in before I took and passed the PTCB test. That test had some seriously crazy questions on it! I had no clue if I passed it or failed it before I hit the final submit button and got my unoffical results, I was that thrown by some of the questions. I ended up only missing 5 of the 80 questions! My suggestion for anyone studying to take the test is to take as many practice tests that you can find in books and on the internet.....many of the questions on these tests are still being used on the current test but they will also prepare you so you feel confident and comfortable when you actually take the test. Forget studying any of the anatomy information in any of the books it isn't on the test. Learn the all the math and practice practice practice. There are youtube videos that can help. Check out Quizlet.com for games that will help you learn sig codes and brand/generic names. Make flash card for the at least the top 200 drugs. When you are at work test yourself about drug names as you are filling Rx's. Know the law and the different federal departments that oversee drugs. Know how to read and translate a sig code as well and calculating dosages and amounts of pills dispensed. Be able to do the math for a sales transaction. Remember there is a calculator on the computer for you to use, practice using the one on your computer so you are comfortable using it. I have only worked in a retail pharmacy and there are a lot of hospital only questions including one about what device do nurses use to make sure they are giving the right patient the right medication......I knew the answer because I had been in a hospital as a patient, and from seeing the question on a practice test. How a person who has only worked in a hospital or only worked in a retail setting is able to pass this test I don't know but you can pass if you research the area you are unfamiliar with. There were so many questions that I was only able to answer because I had dealt with a similar situation at work. I studied most nights for a couple of hours for about 2 months. When I ran across info I didn't understand I would ask my pharmacists about the next chance I got. I worked on the hardest math questions with a senior tech. I work with a person who has been a tech for 7 years and has not been able to pass the test so clearly work experience is not enough to pass the test. Don't take this test until you have spent a good amount of time doing inputting in a real pharmacy. Read the questions carefully, you can mark any question you aren't sure you have the correct answer to and after you are done with the test but before you hit submit go back and redo these questions again and look at them in a new light, especially do this with all math questions. Look for tricks and red herrings. Don't assume anything. Remember that some of the hardest questions might be the ten "test" questions that they are testing before they use them for real. There are 90 questions but only 80 are graded. I took the test later in the afternoon and spent the early part of the day studying. Make sure the name you submitted to the testing company matches your picture ID or they will not let you take the test and you will lose the fee you paid. You have to take this seriously or you are wasting the$129 test fee. Good Luck, work hard.

I tried some other PTCB guide books before, but finally I found out this ASCENCIA one is the best. It will show out the necessary knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry and pathology in combination with the core pharmacology. These knowledge are simply shown out, easily for students to connect together and review together. About the laws of pharmacy, this book also shows out in well organized and easy to remember. The content of this book is rich, compared with many other reference books about PTCB.

Studied this from cover to cover and utilized online test. I passed the certification exam. I took the book test first to see what I needed to know (you need a 70% to pass.) Then, after I studied, I took the online practice test. I didn't feel that the certification exam closely matched what studied, but apparently it was enough.

They really need to hire a better editor. This book is full of grammatical errors, math errors, completely wrong words in some places and has formatting problems. Mistakes throughout the book make it worthless. When you can't count on the material you are studying to be accurate, what it the point? I spent 5 minutes redoing a math problem trying to figure out my mistake and then realized it was the author's or publisher's error and not mine. The math section is fairly poor with limited explanation. If you are using this a just a reminder of how to do math, it will work, but if you need any help or explanation, it isn't helpful at all. The online flash cards they advertise....are 50 cards on miscellaneous topics, which makes them almost worthless. If it was at least the common abbreviations, the current top 200 meds, or the laws....those would be useful, but 50 random cards aren't really helpful.

As a "borderline," I have conflicting feelings on this book. I was diagnosed 12 years ago, at the age of 19. BPD is often misdiagnosed, as it was in my case, until I saw the best psychiatrist I had ever had. The main thing with BPD is that it is very difficult to treat. I admire Rachel's tenacity in her treatment, but I (and I know I am not alone) sometimes struggle with this. This book is good, but I just fear that people may be miseducated about BPD: not many people can say they're "recovered." I am very proud of her, but I've been working 12 years on this, and I am still a very long way from being recovered. Just as a warning: please don't think that your loved one can be "cured" by doing what she did. Everyone is different, and what worked for some people may not work for anyone else.

I had been looking for the perfect book to read to help me with my ever increasing struggles with borderline personality. I had read the "self help" books and the books that tell the symptoms accurately, and in depth, but what I wanted this time was a book written by someone like me, in hopes of feeling less alone. When I was reading the reviews for this book, I found many of them that said the book was "inspirational" and everything like that, and then I read reviews that said it was "simplistic" and "reiterated points over and over", and I wasn't sure if I should even bother.After getting the book for free, I decided there was no reason not to at least read it.The book starts off as described by negative reviews: simplistic. Symptoms of borderline that everyone with borderline sees in themselves were laid out in plain language and not presented in any way that can't be found in the vast "self help" books. At this point, I started to become disappointed and afraid that the book was going to be a waste of time.As the book progresses, Rachel becomes worse, she finds herself, although in recovery, lashing out in ways she never imagined and hurting everyone around her. There were times that I read the book and I found myself hating her, and worse, I hated myself.And then, as Rachel finds herself becoming sucked in to the depths of her disorder, and getting out of control, layers and layers of broken coping mechanisms that had appeared nothing more than abusive, manipulative and selfish reveal the true nature of the borderline personality: never ending fear of being forever alone and unlovable.It was at this point that the mere presentation of common symptoms became much more: as Rachel begins to understand herself, the symptoms are shown to the reader as more than dysfunctional coping mechanisms: they are given a sense of humanity and drive and begin to show the motives of nothing more than a terrified, humiliated child, reaching out to be unconditionally loved.This was when I realized that the progression of the book was perfect: the book begins, as described, very simplistic, as Rachel doesn't understand herself and only sees destructive behaviors that she can't make sense of. And then eventually the complexity of the book becomes overwhelming, as Rachel sees her inner most feelings and tries to cope.This book, to be blatant, could not be fully appreciated by someone who has not personally felt what it is like to live with borderline personality disorder. To someone on the outside: it is just a case of a psychotic woman who finds treatment and recovers. To someone with borderline: it is a chilling account of their very own life, innermost fears worked through by complete strangers.There are so many things in this book that are revolutionary for me, that trying to sit here and convey them feels almost impossible. Although I read reviews of the book that complain that it is reiterative, and the basis of therapy is nothing more than constantly repeating the same explanation... that is the core of the borderline personality. A persistent need by that person to find love and hold on to it as tightly as possible, and no matter how many broken coping mechanisms they force themselves to work away from, they find themselves with more, different broken coping mechanisms in hopes of achieving the same task.Dr. Padgett presents a therapy technique for Rachel that is so much more than I could have ever imagined experiencing in therapy. He presents the one thing that people with borderline truly need: unconditional love, a feeling of safety, while still experiencing limits and boundaries in the face of their destructive behaviors. Although Rachel becomes painfully aware of how dysfunctional she has become, she is never led to feel by Dr. Padgett as though she is bad or wrong, or that she doesn't deserve to be happy. Without this, I don't believe that her feelings could have been dealt with.The explanation of the book is correct in saying that it is in no way a self help book, and will never lead anyone to recovery. What it offers, instead, is something much more realistic: measurable, achievable results for someone suffering from severe borderline, in turn giving the reader an intense sense of hope. The book shows the many many layers of borderline defenses come crashing down, and never for once is there an unrealistic overnight "Aha!" where Rachel suddenly feels better, because this is not how it works.As someone who has suffered from borderline for what feels like every waking hour of my entire life, and struggled with therapy and medications to find no answers, this book gives me something to hold on to and helps me believe that I can one day be like Rachel. I hope that many other people with borderline, out of answers, pick up this book and find the strength to continue on.

If you have someone with BPD in your life, this story is a must-read page turner, both for you and for them (if they're in treatment and are able to read such material without being triggered).The fact that this is a true story, and that the author (as she describes in the book) was such a dedicated journal keeper / note taker as to be able to recall this level of detail, gives this the potential to be a very healing read. The fact that she is also a good writer (or had very good editors to help her to keep what could have been a monster of a story to balance and keep interesting) seals the deal.Read it from beginning to end in about 36 hours of living, then instantly gave a copy to a person that I know struggling with similar issues. They also appreciated it.It is harrowing, and so, so very true-to-life for anyone that has seen or dealt with these issues, and also very, very hopeful and instructive.This author (my understanding is that Rachel is a pseudonym) has done a tremendous service to a great many suffering people by writing this book. It's existence is evidence both of her own recovery and that people can and do, in fact, recover from BPD.

A very insightful, articulate account of an intelligent woman's struggles from untreated features of borderline personality disorder--namely, a the constant assault from all angles of overwhelming emotions. She does a great job detailing what happened during outbursts and fights with her husband, and later narrating her thoughts about her statements and behavior during the episodes. Listening to her describe her thoughts about different "blow-ups", having the disorder, and treatment is the most enlightening aspect of this book. It is also reassuring to know how often she did blame herself or recognize she was wrong for her behavior during these episodes, and the underlying shame and fear of abandonment that pervades her account allows me to be more understanding and less angry with otherwise inexplicable, inconsiderate, and even sociopathic behavior I observe from those in my life suffering from overwhelming emotional dysregulation.

Stunning glimpse into the mind... Standout writing. Tight storyline. Gripping details. Intense. Page turner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has felt crazy, and to anyone who's been with someone who's acted crazy. The end was beautiful. This book is for all therapists, counselors, clergy and family members of mentally ill people. Must read! Sorry to have finished this book, a feeling akin to her experience with termination. There is so much insight in this book. It is rich, honest, raw, intelligent. I absolutely love it!
