While the author certainly seems to hold a wide. respected position in the academic world, I was a bit disappointed in this book. I found it to be quite disjointed and it just didn't have a smooth flow. I was expecting an overview of the field of civil engineering but instead got a hodge podge of case studies and philosophical rants about the history and future of the profession. There was a discussion about the Sydney Opera House that was interesting and some history about the origin of the term 'civil engineer', but overall the book did not keep my attention and did not clearly lay things out the way I had hoped.
Just learned I'd be teaching an Intro to Civil Engineering class this Fall for freshmen-level students. Although certainly not the only course material, I plan to incorporate this book into the class. It is very informative, yet written so that someone who is just being introduced to the discipline can understand the material. This book will help me set the global and societal context of civil engineering for new students that don't yet know the language of the profession.
When I was signing up for college, I had never heard of civil engineering. At school, I learned that it is the people who set up the roads. I didn't have time during school to really investigate it. Now that I've graduated, I have time to read a couple hundred pages introducing the main concepts. This book fills that role *admirably*. I loved its broad-sweeping coverage of the history, business aspects, and the field's various branches. I found myself on pleasant Wikipedia detours to go deeper into subjects I was interested in (e.g. pumps, wow cool). I would have liked more technical and practical details about how to *do* civil engineering in the modern day, but I guess I'll need a real textbook for that material.
I'm crazy about the "Very Short Introduction" series. These books are written for the layperson by absolute experts in in the field. And most of them are written at a level that satisfies the thirst for knowledge without draining the joy juices from your brain with dry desert-like details. The Engineering volume is excellent; it answers questions I've frequently pondered about what factors affect how things are built.
Nice book. A good primer.
I'm about halfway through the book. I'm a software engineer, but have been interested in materials and methods for construction and civil engineering. This book hit the spot. Enjoyable, light reading, that covers the (very) basics interspersed with some historical construction projects and events.
I enjoyed the historical examples and the historical prospective in this readable book. There is a lot more to engineering than math.
