Review
"Designing Reality delivers a thought-provoking dialogue with relevance for other emerging technologies as well as digital fabrication. The Gershenfelds engagingly alert us not only to the opportunities that digital fabrication presents but also to the societal and governance challenges that the widespread diffusion of this technology will generate."―Science "In Designing Reality, the brothers Gershenfeld have provided a compelling roadmap for how accelerating technology will merge the digital and physical worlds (bits and atoms) and drive the next stage in our evolution as a species."―Ray Kurzweil, Inventor, Author and Futurist, author of The Singularity is Near and How to Create a Mind"If the last 70+ years have told the story of atoms converted into bits, then the next will tell the story of bits being turned back into atoms. The members of the Gershenfeld troika arm-wrestle their way through alternative future scenarios that highlight the possibilities and the challenges that computer-based fabrication offer. One could not ask for a better point-counter-point exploration of the Third Digital Revolution."―Vint Cerf, VP and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google"Designing Reality is nothing less than a full-blown manifesto for ushering in the age of digital fabrication, the third leg of the digital revolution. Anchoring the authors' comprehensive vision is the exponential growth of fab labs, a globally extant collection of now over 1000 digital fabrication testbeds. Codifying the lessons learned from more than a decade of success and failure, they powerfully advocate for fab labs as a model for accelerating the growth of and universal access to digital fabrication for all humanity."―Justin Rattner, Chief Technology Officer, Intel Corporation (retired)"Designing Reality is an invitation and roadmap for all of us to bring our talent, passion, and communities to proactively shape our shared future. At the core of the Fab movement is a network of humans working together in radical collaboration from every corner of the planet, growing creative confidence in themselves and others. Challenges abound today, as do opportunities; our author-trio invite us all into the mix, because if we include everyone, we can fix (nearly) everything. Opt-in -- yourself, your family, your community."―Megan J. Smith and Puneet Kaur Ahira, 3rd U.S. Chief Technology Officer, Entrepreneur, Engineer; Founder & CEO at shift7 Co-Founder & Chief Architect at shift7; former White House, Google, Goldman Sachs"Bhutan's biggest constraint in promoting Gross National Happiness (GNH), our development philosophy, is its heavy reliance on imports at the end of long supply chains. Designing Reality shows that digital fabrication can overcome this constraint by allowing us to fabricate locally while thinking globally and being true to the principles of GNH. We look forward to Bhutan becoming not just a Fab City, but a Fab Country."―Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan"Providing universal access to digital fabrication is one of the most important challenges and opportunities of our time. Designing Reality is a manual describing what it is, why it is important, and how to get there."―Congressman Bill Foster, Ph.D."In this mind-altering book, the Gershenfelds envision a future of making things that's not dominated by big factories and powerful companies. Instead, it's centered around local innovators using powerful tools to design and build the realities they want. If this sounds good to you, here's the blueprint for making it happen."―Andrew McAfee, MIT Scientist and co-author of The Second Machine Age"Ordinary people can now create objects with almost arbitrary levels of complexity, in large part because of the Gershenfelds' insights and leadership. Designing Reality is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand this revolution and its implications."―Erik Brynjolfsson, Director MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and co-author of The Second Machine Age and Machine, Platform, Crowd"Designing Reality is more than a deep look into the future of making things, it's a sobering (yet entertaining) reflection on how we will need to design society to accommodate the wholesale changes that these technologies are certain to bring. The Gershenfelds have fused their talents to provide a clear picture of how digital materials will come to pass, while addressing the needed transformation in the social sciences if we are to avoid uneven distribution of the benefits. The book offers a highly probable account of a future where error-correcting self-assembly will allow anyone to make (almost) anything."―James A. Warren, Physicist and Director of the Materials Genome Program

Designing Reality is a call to action for all makers. The Fab Lab movement is transforming America, and the world, and Designing Reality is a how to guide to bring transformation to your own community. Neil Gershenfeld, along with his brothers share the incredible story of how Fab Lab allows makers to "make Almost Anything". Extra credit for writing a book with your brothers and living to tell about it! The advantage of this book, is that Neil's brothers are also distinguished scholars in their own rights, and so they offer a balance to his technocratic view. The 3rd Digital revolution will be at the nexus of "Technology, popular media, and management:", and Designing Reality does an exquisite job of showing us what that means. The book, tells the back story to the first 2 Digital revolutions, and how this next revolution will be different. It cautions us to consider upfront how Society will embrace technology, and to plan on rolling it out such that global inclusion is front and center. In a world that is concerned with job loss, and the hollowing out of the core competency of making -- Designing Reality is a bright shining star guiding us to the Promised land.
Blows the lid off the future for us oldie-moldies!
Great overview of the social implications of digital manufacturing technologies.
Great!

Interesting read
If you want to be proselytized about fab labs, this is the book for you. A key premise is that an analogy of Moore's law will (or should?) apply to digital fabrication. This is based on a few years of doubling of the number of fab labs out there. Moore's original paper was based on 10 years of data but the trend there has continued for 50 years. If that holds for fabbing, yeah, it'll change the world bigtime. But the case has yet to be made. I liked that the Gershenfeld brothers wrote different chapters of the book, with quite different life experiences they bring different perspectives. But it's all based on that exponential premise, one that I'm quite skeptical about. The last of Neil's chapters envisions how fabbing might eventually get to assembling very tiny parts so you could really make anything, but this is almost laughably sketchy and technically infeasible. There's something called chemistry that Neil doesn't seem to be paying attention to. Still, fabbing is a fascinating new technology with lots of possibilities and this book will give you a good feel for how it's affecting some people's lives. There are some good stories mixed in with the questionable extrapolation of trends.
According to Neil Gershenfeld, Alan Gershenfeld, and Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, the third of three digital revolutions has begun. The first was in communication, the second was in computation, and the third, in fabrication. "The first two revolutions rapidly expanded access to communication and computation; this one will allow anyone to make (almost) anything. This time around, it's likely to be even more significant than the first two, because it's brining the programmability of the world into bits out of the world of atoms."Here is one of the key questions to which they direct their attention: "If anyone can make anything anywhere, how will we love, learn, work, and play?" In this context, I am again reminded of Alvin Toffler's observation in Future Shock (1984): "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."In this book, its co-authors examine "the trajectory of digital fabrication. They aim to help their readers "use this knowledge to both prepare for and shape the third digital revolution." We are still in its early stages. "Research priorities are being formulated, core technologies are developing, and the organizations and institutions essential to universal fab access and literacy are emerging."As I began to read this brilliant analysis, I soon realized that the book's title can be view from at least two perspectives: designing for current realities, and, designing for imminent realities as the third revolution taps increasingly deeper into the human desire to make things, especially in collaboration with machines. The co-authors are convinced -- as am I -- that designing reality can also be viewed both metaphorically and literally as the third revolution proceeds into what is indeed an uncertain future. This is probably what Josh Sullivan and Angela Zutavern had in mind when writing The Mathematical Corporation. I agree with them that – with rare exception -- a superior machine in collaboration with a superior human will outperform a superior machine or a superior human working alone. It is also true that there are certain tasks that a superior machine cannot do or do better than can a superior human...and vice versa. In their Conclusion, Neil Gershenfeld, Alan Gershenfeld, and Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld express a call to arms: "We need to shape (and continually reshape) our organizations and institutions even as we live within them. To paraphrase Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweikart, we are not passengers on the third digital revolution roadmap. We are the crew."If you are looking for a book that can put white caps on your gray matter, look no further.
