The title is a bit of a misnomer and, while it may help sell books, it also damages Cornwell's credibility before the reader has a chance to dive in. Nevertheless, Cornwell presents a challenging, thought provokin book that is as well researched as his previous works.Cornwell makes a compelling argument for Pope Piux XII involvement in Hitler's final solution for the Jews. Cornwell demonstrates a historian's eye for detail and a sense of purpose that helps illuminate Pacelli's biases. Pacelli was very much a man of his time and that, along with the fact that he became pope at a cruial moment in history, is unfortunate. We can't expect the average man or woman to transcend the views of their time, but we should expect it of our leaders. In that regard, Pacelli failed humanity, the Catholic Church and, ultimately, the papcy.Any historian approaches his subjects with a certain amount of bias (just as any author of a scientific or medical study knows what outcome they want to prove prior to writing the protocol for a study). That doesn't discredit the results as long as the work is well documented.

Great documentation of behind the scenes events and political situations created by the Catholic Church heirarchy and apparent cooperation with Hitler.

Anyone who reads this book must study the book in the light of Ronald Rychlak's more comprehensive and much better documented Hitler , the War and the Pope. One emerges from the comparison with a clear sense that Cornwell has a axe to grind. His book is both an attack on Vatican theology and the character of Pius XII . It claims that it shows that Pius XII was anti-semitic culturally as well as doctrinally and suggests that if Pius were more collegial and less authoritarian Pius would have been more demonstrative in his denunciation of Hitler than he was Pius might have not only saved his reputation but helped in the downfall of Hitler.Rychlak shows that he actually listened to his bishops and produces evidence to show that his Bishops in Germany had urged moderation. Was this not collegial ? So did Pius XII's informants in Poland, Cornwell would have had the Church become an outspoken opposition group to Hitler and try to make the Catholic Church act as a spear-head of a rebellion within Germany.It is also seems clear that many Catholics in Germany would have sided with Hitler. Hitler would have invaded the Vatican, killed or kidnapped Pius sent all the Jews Pius was hiding directly or indirectly to concentration camps and more Jewish lives would have been lost. Untold numbers of Catholics opposed to Hitler would have been rounded up and sent there as well. From 1940 and onward the Pope had through his own network of spies made participated in schemes to have Hitler assassinated! Furthermore the Vatican surrounded by Hitler's ally Mussolini and hardly in a position to foment an active opposition to Hitler. Communication such as it was would have ceased altogether between the Vatican and the outside world.After reading Cornwell one should also read Reibling's excellent Church of Spies to learn about in more detail what steps Pius did make to rid the world of Hitler. I am not a Catholic but fair is fair. Hitler's Pope is if not quite malicious in conception by comparison with Rychlak's Hitler the War and the Pope ( who makes no secret of his Catholicism) is demonstrably unfair, wrong-headed, biased and poorly documented.

Did the people who wrote the vituperative reviews here read the same book I did?? Cornwall doesn't parrot Hochhuth's play (The Deputy); he takes great pains to point out how unfair Hochhuth was to the papacy. He translates Mit brennender Sorge correctly, if not literally ("With Deep Anxiety", p. 181). The cover picture is correctly identified as dating from 1927... and he does discuss the efforts which the Vatican made in rescuing Jews during the war.The title is a bit sensationalistic (probably intended to sell more books). As Cornwell clearly states, Pacelli was no friend of Hitler's. It's easy to sit in our armchairs 50 years later and second-guess what he should have done during the war, but I don't think anyone is entitled to demand someone else's martyrdom. Surrounded by Fascist Italy, and with at least one Nazi plot to kidnap him, one can hardly blame Pacelli for not coming down on the side of the Allies. I think there's room to give him the benefit of the doubt (which Cornwell, alas doesn't) that he felt that maintaining neutrality was the best strategy (for both the papacy and the world), and sincerely believed what he said, that protests would have caused more harm than good in the long run.

Being not Catholic or Jewish, this book opened my eyes to this side of WWII I never knew. Well documented and researached work which portrays the papacy movement to ultimate,unchecked power which had massive consequences when coupled with the Nazi uprising.You can feel the author's respect for his church and the pain he feels in presenting a true and accurate picture of what occurred based on his findings in primary and secondary historical sources. So revealing was the anti-Semitism within the Vatican for years and Pacelli's political maneuvering to look so moral and compassionate to all peoples when all the while his silence meant so horrible a fate to thousands.
