If you're looking for a cookie cutter, paint by numbers, book on filmmaking, so you can make Die Hard XX, this is not that. But if you're looking for theories and philosophies that will stay with you forever, and that can help open your mind to find your own cinematic voice, then this is the book for you. This book is very dense, so don't think this will be a light read. Expect to have to reread sections. If you know what you're getting into with this book you'll probably love it as I do.
The book arrived in a timely manner in fairly good condition used.Word of advice though, make sure you want Film SENSE and not Film FORM. Not only are the titles deceptively similar, the covers are almost identical. If you study film you'll eventually need both anyway but double check to avoid frustration.
Eisenstein was one of the first people to think deeply about film and the film process. His ideas still apply.
The impressive erudition and untiring process of investigation of Eisenstein is carved in relief in this priceless book.Fascinating and sweeping from the very start. Specially worthy of interest is the chapter in which he tallks about the use of color.I received five years ago this book as a gift and believe me, its reading is rewarding and gratifying.Don't let to purchase it.
Eisenstein thoughts on montage and how the mind interpets film is invaluable when creating films of one's own. Read the book 3 times to learn it for the first.
If you want to improve your own films, this book will not help you (I doubt that any book would). If you can actually figure out what Eisenstien is trying to say (which would probably take 3 readings, but who has the time?) you will find only obscure and vague theories. They are interesting in what they reveal about Eisenstein and his films, but they will not help you as a filmmaker!
