This is one of those stories that you won't want to put it down until the end. Good news, it isn't long. Even better news, it isn't real short either.Amber has been in the foster system since she was 5. Her mother died giving birth to her, her ill grandmother cared for her as long as she could. She never knew who her father is. The closest she can get is an old picture of her mother and some guy 9 months before she is born and his first name is on the back.Good news is that she was pretty much unharmed through the system. Bad news is when she is months from turning 18, her new foster father tries something. She pushes him away and he falls down the stairs. She runs.She comes across Ryan on the bus and stays with him for awhile, then she leaves to go to Chicago where she thinks her father may be and comes across Oliver. Once she finds out about her father, she leaves without meeting him and returns to turn herself in about her foster father.The story is good in that you see Amber grow from a frightened 17 year old and within one year so grows into a strong woman who stands on her own two feet. You just gotta read this book. It does have a little bit of darkness, but not too much. I now have to go read all of the books that Kelli Callahan has written.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Amber was a young woman who was in foster care since she was 5 and her grandmother could no longer care for her. Her mother died in childbirth, but she had a picture of her mom and a man who was supposed to be her father. At 17 she ended in a foster home, where she thought she could stay until she turned 18, then go to Chicago to find a man named Adrian who was her father. But she was wrong since the man of the house decided she was to learn how to please him on her knees and in the bedroom...she pushed him down the stairs and ran. After getting a bus ride with money in foster father's wallet, she landed in Denver. She sat with Ryan on the bus, a nice guy who didn't try to take advantage of her, and when he ran into her again a little later, panhandling, took her to his apartment. After offering him more, with him declining, on her 18th birthday when he gave her bus ticket to complete her journey to Chicago, she left...getting there and showing the old picture to people. One cop saw it, knowing immediately the face belonged to King of Chicago and told his brother who led a vigilante attack against Adrian Prescott, but you will need to read this compelling book to see what happens...I voluntarily read this book through an advanced Reader Copy.
