Review

“I’ve always been grateful for Jeff Vanderstelt’s heart for discipleship. Rather than drawing people to himself, he labors to help others understand the power they possess in the Spirit. He does what all good leaders should do: spends his days equipping others to do the work of the ministry.”―Francis Chan, New York Times bestselling author, Crazy Love and Forgotten God“Saturate is a compelling and biblically serious picture of Jesus and the mission he has given his people. It is a book that is deeply doctrinal and helpfully applicable. I have known Jeff to faithfully live out the philosophies of life and day-to-day ministry contained in these pages, and have watched firsthand as God produced much fruit. I pray it encourages you.”―Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Dallas, Texas; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; author, The Mingling of Souls and The Explicit Gospel “Jeff is one of the smartest, most dedicated, and most interesting disciple-makers I know. In this book, and through the medium of his life story, he effectively passes on the key insights that make him one of the best movement leaders in the country. Saturate is a winner.”―Alan Hirsch, Founder, Forge and Future Travelers; award winning author, Untamed, Right Here Right Now, and ReJesus“If someone were to ask me where to go to learn about discipleship, I would hand them the Bible along with Jeff Vanderstelt’s book Saturate. Readers will find themselves taking a survey of their lives, seeing the areas that God desires to take captive for his glory. Whether you are a preacher, homemaker, small-group leader, high school student, or new convert, Saturate will spur you on to live a life that will influence others to know Jesus while growing people in Jesus, not just at church, but in all of life.”―Jackie Hill Perry, poet; writer; hip-hop artist“This is a thought-provoking, heart-warming account of a body of believers taking God’s call to live as family seriously. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by the details or quibble with the incidentals. This book challenges and encourages all of us to intentionally live on mission in the mundane details and events of everyday life.”―Steve Timmis, Executive Director, Acts 29 Church Planting Network“Jeff Vanderstelt uses an ordinary experience to give us extraordinary insight into what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Saturate is a great challenge to all of us to stop doing church and be the church!”―Dave Ferguson, Lead Pastor, Community Christian Church, Naperville, Illinois; Lead Visionary, NewThing“In Saturate, Jeff Vanderstelt endeavors to provide Christians with an image of God’s grace that is all-encompassing and inescapable. Whether you are new to the faith or a seasoned believer, Jeff’s words will encourage you and focus God’s gospel on every facet of your life. This book will challenge the way you see your Savior, your mission, and your everyday life.”―Ed Stetzer, Billy Graham Distinguished Chair of Church, Mission, and Evangelism, Wheaton College“Jeff Vanderstelt’s passion and commitment to the fame of Jesus are as evident in this book as they are in his preaching. It was so refreshing to read chapter after chapter that lifted high the name of Jesus and to be challenged to do the same more and more in my life and ministry.”―Matt Carter, Pastor of Preaching, The Austin Stone Community Church, Austin, Texas; coauthor, The Real Win“Saturate is a crucially needed and down-to-earth manual for what is most important―loving God and loving neighbors. This week I was able to read and review an interesting study on being a disciple of Jesus. It's called "Saturate" and it is written by Jeff Vanderstelt. The main point that author Jeff Vanderstelt is trying to make is that Christianity is not a once a week thing. We don't just go to church every Sunday and think that we've done all that we can do. God is calling us to do so much more. He initially decided to write "Saturate" after thinking on Habakuk 2:14 "For the Earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." Every believer should practice discipleship in such a way that saturates the world they live in.There are 5 main points to this book that are crucial to living a life of discipling. Part one mostly explains the premise of the book. Part two describes the life of Jesus. Part three builds on our faith in Christ. Part four explains how we shouldn't merely be doing discipleship, but that we need to live it. Part five gives everyday examples and stories about things on our daily journey of discipleship. There is only one thing I disliked about this book, and it is pretty insignificant, but I feel it must be mentioned. The front cover is very hard to look at. It is bright orange and teal (almost neon) and is quite the visual illusion. It actually gave me a little bit of a headache looking at it.Overall, I thought this was an excellent book! It has a lot of interesting information and really broadens the subject of discipling. It would be excellent to read through with a group of people, or even a Sunday school class or small group. In addition to the "Saturate" book, I also received "Saturate Field Guide" by Jeff Vanderstelt and Ben Connelly to read and review! The field guide goes hand in hand with the book, and is meant to be done in a group setting, such as a Bible Study or small group, but can also be done on your own. It's a spiral bound, 244 page book which demonstrates the principles and practices for living out the life of a disciple of Jesus in the everyday. It's an 8 week study which includes questions, activities, prayers, and exercises which will help you on your journey to becoming a disciple and helping you disciple others. The "Saturate Field Guide" is appropriate for new Christians, or people who have been Christians for a long time. What I liked best about this study was that it was very simple to follow. It's not complicated in any sense and it's something that any Christian can do! It really makes you take a look at your life and try to change things for the better.I received these books for free from Litfuse in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.

I have enjoyed following and learning from Soma communities over the course of the last 5 years, I was excited when this book “Saturate” came out. Jeff Vanderstelt author of Saturate has written an excellent book on what it looks like to saturate our everyday lives with Jesus’ presence and power.I greatly appreciate the way Vanderstelt writes with openness and honesty about living for Jesus in the everyday stuff of life. Many people separate Sundays and the rest of the week. Or at best sprinkle in events of following Jesus. This book will challenge your perspective on areas of your life that God is challenging and calling you to live more fully in Him. There are many valuable lessons to be learned from this book.I may compile a separate post of key lessons. For now here is a fairly detailed summary overview of the book and the contents of the chapters.IntroductionCan you imagine every city, every neighborhood, every street, and every house saturated with Jesus’s presence through his people? This book is written to encourage the everyday Jesus follower to engage in the everyday stuff of life with the goal of seeing Jesus saturation for everyone in every place.Part 1: BeginningsChapter 2: Jesus Goes to Poker PartiesWhat if we were to start a church that feasted and celebrated around Jesus together? All of life was to be done as an expression of their love for God. Jesus did everything for his heavenly Father’s glory. This is what Jesus does. Jesus makes life better. Jesus brings the better wine. Jesus takes empty religion and ritual, and brings it to life for everyday people. He takes what many deem holy (like the water in the ceremonial cleansing jars) and brings it to the party. He breaks down the barrier between what people might call sacred and secular. Jesus makes all things sacred—including wine at a party. We don’t go to church. We are the church sent out into the world.” Jesus didn’t live, serve, suffer, and die so we could just attend a Christian event. He lived and died so we could become his people who are sent into every part of the world on his behalf. All of life counts and everyone matters. It’s not activities and events that are primarily Christian. It’s people. Activities and events, by themselves, are not sacred, but people are. The word holy in the Bible means to be set apart for God’s purposes in the world. “The role of Jesus’s church—his set-apart people—is to increasingly bring all of life under his leadership so that he is the center of everything,” Have you ever taken time to dream about what God might want to do in and through you where you live and work? Jesus prefers normal, weak, and broken people. All God’s people, everywhere, filling everyday life with his presence. This has always been God’s vision for his people.

For a long time something felt off going to church, but I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. My family left our church to be part of a church plant. It was through that church plant and going to a Soma one day confrence where we heard Jeff talk about living on mission and being a desciple and discipling in the every day stuff of life. That's where it clicked for me. I had been sitting on the sidelines of the pews watching the "pros" live out the Great Commission. Jesus expects us ALL to be in the game, contributing to the team, and be on mission. Saturate shows how to get in the game, what to expect, and how to win.

Jeff shares some much needed perspective on what it might actually look like to BE the church. He explains the Biblical support for his opinions about community, discipleship, evangelism, etc. while also coming down to very practical levels on every subject he covers. My only "problem" with the book is that it was a bit hard to follow at times. Disclaimer: it is worth taking the time to push through parts that may seem hard to get through because each part is really necessary to have a good understanding of what he is trying to communicate - a lifestyle of discipleship to Jesus in close relationships with other Christians as well as those far from God. Well worth your time to read if you're interested in a more grassroots movement of Christianity

Fair Ball Chapter One PLAYOFFS! “Stee-rike ONE!” Derek Jeter winced as he stared at home plate from the on-deck circle. His teammate, Dean O’Leary, had just let a very hittable pitch go right by him. The odds of getting another meatball like that were slim to none. After all, it was the sixth inning already, and there was still no score for either team. Both the Dodgers’ pitcher and Dave Hennum, the Indians’ hurler (and one of Derek’s best friends), were at the top of their game. Neither team had gotten a runner past second base all day. If this game went into extra innings, both sides would have to reach for a relief pitcher. It was the first game of the Westwood Little League playoffs. This year the league had restructured the playoffs. The top four teams were now playing each other in a round-robin. The top two finishers would go head-to-head for the league championship. But that wasn’t all. In a new twist designed by the town, the winner of that game would then play the champion of the East Side league, for the first annual Kalamazoo Trophy! The new format would make for four weeks of tension and excitement—if the Indians got that far. In his heart Derek was sure his team would win it all, including the Kalamazoo Trophy. With his dad as their coach, how could they not? But Derek also knew that they still had to win the games, one by one. A loss to the Dodgers today would not knock them out of contention. But it might prove a fatal blow to their hopes in the end, so every at bat was important. “Stee-rike TWO!” Dean had swung, but the pitch had already landed in the catcher’s mitt. This Dodgers pitcher was a real fireballer. Derek remembered him from the regular season. The Indians had won that game 6–5 but hadn’t scored at all in this guy’s four innings on the mound. And so far today the Indians’ batters hadn’t even sniffed him. Derek swung his bat rhythmically in the on-deck circle, getting ready for his turn. He blew out regular, big breaths, trying to stay relaxed and calm. The next pitch to Dean was in the dirt, and he almost swung at it. But the ump held his arms out in the “safe” sign, ruling that Dean had checked his swing. The count was now 1–2, with one out and nobody on. “Protect, protect,” Derek muttered under his breath, hoping Dean could read his thoughts and would make sure to swing at anything that was close to a strike. The pitch came in. Dean watched it go by—right over the heart of the plate and down at the knees! “Stee-rike three!” yelled the ump. “What?” Dean cried, throwing his hands up. “That pitch was low!” “Yer out!” the ump said. “Let’s go. Next batter.” Dean dragged himself away, groaning with frustration as he passed Derek on his way back to the bench. Derek shook his head in sympathy, but he knew that Dean should have swung. The pitch might have been a little low, but it had been too close to let go by with two strikes. You never knew when an ump might miss a call. If you had to go down, it was better to go down swinging. Derek set his feet in the batter’s box. He could hear his teammates cheering him on. The Indians had learned over the course of their season to pull together as a unit and to play for one another, not just for themselves. That was a tribute to their coaches. Derek’s dad and Coach Bradway had made good players, such as Mason Adams, Jonathan Hogue, and Tito Ortega, better, and they’d made weaker players, such as Gary Parnell, Miles Kaufman, and Derek’s good buddy Vijay Patel, play to the best of their abilities. The Indians might not have been the most talented team in the league, but here they were in the playoffs—and Derek was convinced that this was only the beginning. He had been named their regular-season MVP. If anyone was going to be able to hit the fastest pitcher they’d faced all season, he thought, it was probably him. Derek rubbed some dirt onto his hands to get a better grip on the bat and dug his toes in to get the best possible footing. He pointed the bat straight at the pitcher, as a reminder to himself to try to hit the fastball straight up the middle, and not swing too hard in a useless effort to pull the ball. Here came the pitch, and Derek was ready. The fastball was over the heart of the plate, and Derek’s bat was there to meet it. CRACK! The pitcher ducked. The ball was hit so hard that the center fielder couldn’t get into position before it skidded right by him. Derek was almost to first base when he saw that happen, and immediately he was thinking triple. He rounded second, barely touching it with the outside of his right foot, and slid into third just in time. Now it was all up to Dave. Derek clapped and yelled encouragement along with the rest of the Indians. Dave had all kinds of power, but he struck out a lot because his swing was like a golf swing—up and down and under the ball. There was good reason for that. Dave had started playing golf as a young kid, and he played whenever he got the chance. His dream was to be a professional golfer. He’d learned baseball only a year before, with Derek doing most of the teaching. Derek knew Dave would have a hard time hitting this pitcher. Derek had a feeling that if he wanted to score, he was going to have to do it on his own. So when he saw the 1–1 pitch hit the dirt and get away from the catcher, he took off, trying to steal home. The catcher, who was just picking up the ball, saw Derek barreling toward him. Startled, he lost his grip, and by the time he wheeled around to make the tag, it was too late. “SAFE!” called the ump, stretching his arms out wide. And just like that, Derek had stolen the lead for his team. Dave proceeded to strike out, just as Derek had feared. Now it was the Dodgers’ turn for last licks. Dave was still on the mound, as he had been all game. He had been dominating the Dodgers hitters too, thanks to the wicked changeup that Derek had taught him early in the season. Dave quickly fell behind the first hitter, 3–0. Derek didn’t know how many pitches Dave had already thrown, but it was easy to see that his friend was tired. He knew that if Dave didn’t get through this inning quickly, he’d reach his pitch limit. Derek snuck a peek at Coach Bradway, who was keeping the pitch count. He also happened to be Dave’s guardian, the person who looked after him whenever Dave’s parents were away on business—which was a whole lot. Chase (he liked to be called by his first name) was also the family’s driver. The Hennum family was rich—richer than anyone Derek or his other friends had ever known. After all, not everybody could afford their own driver. After a called strike the hitter lofted a long fly ball to right. Vijay was out there, but he looked uncomfortable as he settled under the ball. The sun must have been in his eyes, because he ducked at the last moment. The ball hit his glove, then popped back up into the air. Derek held his breath for one endless instant, until Vijay recovered his wits and, mercifully, caught the ball a second time before it hit the ground. Well, that’s one out, at least, thought Derek. The next hitter lined the first pitch right at Dave, who at least managed to knock it down. It ricocheted off his glove over to Derek, who threw to first for the second out. “Thanks!” Dave told him, relieved. “Hey, what are friends for?” Derek said, and laughed. Dave had to get just one more out—and he did, when the hitter swung at a 2–0 fastball and hit a fly ball to Gary Parnell in left, who put it away for the final out. Game over. 1–0, Indians! The team had made Derek’s stolen run pay off. They were now 1–0 in the playoffs. As far as Derek was concerned, it was going to be clear sailing from here on in, all the way to the Kalamazoo Trophy! “Hey, Dave,” Derek said as the two of them helped pack up the team’s gear, “don’t forget about next weekend.” “Not a chance!” Dave said with a big grin. For weeks the two boys had been planning a big overnight at Derek’s house. “You can come over right after the game,” Derek offered. “My folks said that whenever you come is good.” “Cool. I just have to check with my folks, and we’re good to go.” “Awesome!” Derek was happy and excited as he got into the car with his dad and Vijay for the drive back to Mount Royal Townhouses, where both the Jeters and the Patels lived. It was early June. Summer was almost here. Soon he’d be vacationing with his grandparents, spending his summer on Greenwood Lake in New Jersey, and going to Yankees games with his grandma. Best of all, his team was going to win the Kalamazoo Trophy! Oh, and the cherry on top? He and Dave were finally going to have their long-planned overnight at Derek’s. For once in his life there wasn’t the ghost of a problem on the horizon, Derek told himself. Other than the team possibly losing next week—which wasn’t going to happen. What could possibly go wrong?

The designs in this book are a pretty mixed bag of very intricate with tiny spaces for coloring, to more simplified designs with larger spaces. The fact that they are printed on just one side of the page is very nice, and the paper is a good thickness. The set up with a board to slip behind the picture being colored is nice, although I found it more convenient to pull the picture out. The printing is a poor quality; the ink smears very easily, which makes the colors look muddy. I didn't buy this for the pencils, because I already have a quality set, but if I had, I would have been VERY disappointed. Like the cheap crayons they give kids at a restaurant, these pencils crumble if you put any significant pressure on them, so you frequently have to brush or blow the paper clear (and hope not to smear), and you still end up with random darker spots where you color; you also can't really do much shading.

There are somewhat strange pictures, that aren't as pretty as the ones shown, but would make a great gift. I use it as an on-my-magazine-stand to color while I'm "watching" tv at night. Nice to have pencils attached, though the pencils aren't very high quality, but for the price I didnt expect them to be!

Love it comes with colored pencils book, sharpener, all attached as 1 unit. Very handy for on the go or at home. Already working in it!

I have purchased three of these book sets, as they are handy for traveling, hospital, and anywhere one needs a bit to do. With the pencils and colouring book in one, I can grab one and put it in my bag or carry around in mobility walker and use whenever and wherever. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with this Butterflies book.Quite a few of the pages are just a single butterfly in the center of the page ... with so much page leftover. It seems like some kind of simple background or border would have helped fill the page and add design appeal. There are also a number of extremely intricate designs -- far more difficult than I generally like to do. They are lovely, just very small details.Like the other books in this series, the book is square, with the designs on just one side of quality paper. The pages are "not" perforated. The twelve double sided pencils (24 colours) are usable, but barely (if you have ever used quality pencils).I just couldn’t take a liking to this book and instead will give it to a grandchild. I like other books in this series much better.

The drawings are too intricate and small, not enough space to color. Even the pencils are too hard to hold, they are slippery and slide right out of my hands. Very disappointed with this purchase, would send back if i could.

Great book for travel, pencils & sharpener included in the cover in a resealable protective case. It is a hardbound book so no need to ha e a hardsurface to color on the binding does the job! Some the the pictures are not the greatest but all in all a good purchase

These pencils are variable in colors and duel sided with a metal sharpener! They are very nice! I spent a lot of time using the strong color pencils keeping easily between the lines. And This has a butterfly coloring book that to my suggestion can be copied on a scanner and re done over though several accounts. You'll enjoy having these pencil colors with butterfly pics in this hard copy cover.

My mom loves this set! The pictures are beautiful and it comes with the color pencils :)

I'd heard good things about this book, and when I saw it in an airport I decided it might make good airplane reading. And it did. However, it's not a whole lot more than that. The characters are OK and in some cases mildly intriguing; the plot is interesting but not gripping (and in a few places it seems somewhat outlandish/incredible); and the atmospherics of the late 19th/early 20th Century are well done. However, particularly as compared to some of the things I've read lately, this book has no "staying" power and provoked no further thought once I'd finished it.

While I was fascinated to read about the magical era of invention in the late 1800s, I would rather have read an in-depth, well researched non-fiction book, like those written by David McCullough, than a fiction book, even if based largely on fact. The central theme of the book is the lengthy litigation ongoing between Thomas Edison, who advocated use of Direct Current (DC) based electricity, and George Westinghouse, who favored Alternating Current (AC). In the end, as we all now know, AC won out. Except for vehicles (and similar uses) which use DC current, the rest of our lives are powered by AC current, in which Nikolas Tesla (who plays a major role in this novel) played a significant part in development of the technology. Thomas Edison is pretty much portrayed as a narcissistic, self-centered, win at all costs character who will stop at nothing (lying, cheating, spying, etc.) to win at any cost - and he is well-backed in that regard by J.P. Morgan, who owns 60% of Edison General Electric. Ultimately, Edison's refusal to move away from his significant investments in the less efficient Direct Current approach resulted in George Westinghouse (and others) to push AC as the standard for distributing electricity throughout the U.S., and Edison's falling sales and profit prompted J.P. Morgan to remove him as head of Edison General Electric and move his investments into the AC technology led by George Westinghouse under the renamed General Electric company. Based on my quick research, it appears that the primary events, characters, activities, and results portrayed in this novel are accurate, so in that sense it does serve to not only enlighten the reader, but also to provide that knowledge couched in a pretty interesting storyline with some suspense, a love interest, and other more human events. I enjoyed the book.

God Said, “Let There Be light.” Thomas Edison Said, “Not Yet.”By Bob Gelms Graham Moore is an exceptionally good writer who makes himself increasingly significant every time he touches a keyboard. In my view, he has already turned himself into a writer who must be read. I’ll now read anything he writes. Mr. Moore has won an Academy Award for the screenplay he wrote for the motion picture The Imitation Game. It also won him a Writers Guild of American Award from his peers and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Flush with success, he quickly published his first novel, The Sherlockian. It raced up the charts into best-seller-land and I wrote about it in the last issue of 365ink. Tempus Fugit and along comes his second novel, The Last Days of Night. It, too, is a best seller but a bigger one at that and one of the best examples of historical fiction that comes to mind. If you’ll pardon a colloquialism, it’s a humdinger squared. The events that take place in the book are all true. The major characters and a few of the minor ones are all real people. I found it incessantly fascinating. You will read about the relationships between George Westinghouse, Nicola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Westinghouse’s lawyer, Paul Cravath, an appearance by J. P. Morgan, and a whole congregation of New York socialites, mega-wealthy business men and politicians. Most of these relationships became poisonously deadly. At issue first was the light bulb. Thomas Edison conned the public into believing that he had invented the little glass miracle that glowed in the dark. He didn’t. Men by the names of Sawyer, Man, and Joseph Swan did the real inventing and held the patents. Edison “borrowed” their work which gave him a massive leg-up. Edison improved the design just enough for the Patent Office to issue him a patent. Then George Westinghouse did to Edison what Edison did to Sawyer, Man, and Swan. He made a better light bulb, but in Westinghouse’s case he did make a better bulb…much, much better in almost every way. Edison promptly sued Westinghouse for one billion dollars with a “B.” While this was going on, there was a life and death struggle to see which form of electricity would wind up in use all over the world in people’s houses and businesses. Would it be Edison’s DC (direct current) which was massively inefficient, outrageously expensive, and horrifically dangerous? Or would it be Tesla’s and Westinghouse’s AC (alternating current) which was efficient, inexpensive, and safe? It was a war. Read and learn. Nicola Tesla was a bona fide, 5 star, golden genius, the kind of genius that would be mentioned in the same sentence with Sir Isaac Newton and Leonardo da Vinci. He was also psychotic in the clinical sense. He described getting his ideas fully formed from dreams or hallucinations that were vivid, lasted days, and were sometimes scary. He, eventually, had a total nervous breakdown. Tesla should have been born at the end of the 21st century. He was that far ahead of the times. In the 1890s, he described in detail television, cell phones, radio and wireless communication. When Gugliemo Marconi “invented” radio using 17 of Tesla’s patents, the court case that ensued went all the way to the SCOTUS. Six months after Tesla died a penniless vagrant in a flop house in New York, the SCOTUS vacated Marconi’s claim of inventing radio and gave the invention’s ownership to Tesla because of Marconi's patent infringement. Nicola Tesla invented radio not Marconi. Tesla worked for both Edison (which ended incredibly badly) and Westinghouse (which also ended badly). Tesla was not a businessman and being thrown into the proverbial tank with sharks like Morgan, Edison and Westinghouse, poor Nicola Tesla was torn apart and eaten alive. Westinghouse, Edison, J. P. Morgan, and Paul Cravath who was Westinghouse’s wunderkind attorney, managed to resist killing each other despite the fact that they all had serious thoughts of doing so. They came together in a genius settlement that Mr. Cravath, who was 27 years old at the time, devised. That didn’t stop a massively hostile takeover attempt by one or more of the lads of one or more of the existing companies. The Edison General Electric Company, in what was nothing more than a malicious act of payback by someone who had the power to do it, removed Edison’s name from the company and that, dear reader, is how we got General Electric. Graham Moore’s The Last Days of Night is a grand slam home run. It’s wonderfully written, plotted and spellbinding. It is endlessly entertaining. I give it 8 stars out of a possible 5. You will not be disappointed.

Events are compressed, some interior conversations are created by the author, but the story itself is largely true. And what a story it is! Many giants of the American Industrial Revolution knocked heads and pocketbooks in the development and diffusion of electricity - and the most significant device that electricity made possible: the light bulb.Edison, Westinghouse, J. P. Morgan, Nicola Tesla, Alexander Graham Bell and young attorney named Paul Cravath all played a role in this fascinating story.Take a break from binge-watching TV or internet content. Instead, pick a weekend and read the whole book between Friday night and Monday morning. You'll feel wonderful having been so thoroughly engaged and entertained.

The title is a bit of a misnomer and, while it may help sell books, it also damages Cornwell's credibility before the reader has a chance to dive in. Nevertheless, Cornwell presents a challenging, thought provokin book that is as well researched as his previous works.Cornwell makes a compelling argument for Pope Piux XII involvement in Hitler's final solution for the Jews. Cornwell demonstrates a historian's eye for detail and a sense of purpose that helps illuminate Pacelli's biases. Pacelli was very much a man of his time and that, along with the fact that he became pope at a cruial moment in history, is unfortunate. We can't expect the average man or woman to transcend the views of their time, but we should expect it of our leaders. In that regard, Pacelli failed humanity, the Catholic Church and, ultimately, the papcy.Any historian approaches his subjects with a certain amount of bias (just as any author of a scientific or medical study knows what outcome they want to prove prior to writing the protocol for a study). That doesn't discredit the results as long as the work is well documented.

Great documentation of behind the scenes events and political situations created by the Catholic Church heirarchy and apparent cooperation with Hitler.

Anyone who reads this book must study the book in the light of Ronald Rychlak's more comprehensive and much better documented Hitler , the War and the Pope. One emerges from the comparison with a clear sense that Cornwell has a axe to grind. His book is both an attack on Vatican theology and the character of Pius XII . It claims that it shows that Pius XII was anti-semitic culturally as well as doctrinally and suggests that if Pius were more collegial and less authoritarian Pius would have been more demonstrative in his denunciation of Hitler than he was Pius might have not only saved his reputation but helped in the downfall of Hitler.Rychlak shows that he actually listened to his bishops and produces evidence to show that his Bishops in Germany had urged moderation. Was this not collegial ? So did Pius XII's informants in Poland, Cornwell would have had the Church become an outspoken opposition group to Hitler and try to make the Catholic Church act as a spear-head of a rebellion within Germany. It is also seems clear that many Catholics in Germany would have sided with Hitler. Hitler would have invaded the Vatican, killed or kidnapped Pius sent all the Jews Pius was hiding directly or indirectly to concentration camps and more Jewish lives would have been lost. Untold numbers of Catholics opposed to Hitler would have been rounded up and sent there as well. From 1940 and onward the Pope had through his own network of spies made participated in schemes to have Hitler assassinated! Furthermore the Vatican surrounded by Hitler's ally Mussolini and hardly in a position to foment an active opposition to Hitler. Communication such as it was would have ceased altogether between the Vatican and the outside world. After reading Cornwell one should also read Reibling's excellent Church of Spies to learn about in more detail what steps Pius did make to rid the world of Hitler. I am not a Catholic but fair is fair. Hitler's Pope is if not quite malicious in conception by comparison with Rychlak's Hitler the War and the Pope ( who makes no secret of his Catholicism) is demonstrably unfair, wrong-headed, biased and poorly documented.

Did the people who wrote the vituperative reviews here read the same book I did?? Cornwall doesn't parrot Hochhuth's play (The Deputy); he takes great pains to point out how unfair Hochhuth was to the papacy. He translates Mit brennender Sorge correctly, if not literally ("With Deep Anxiety", p. 181). The cover picture is correctly identified as dating from 1927... and he does discuss the efforts which the Vatican made in rescuing Jews during the war.The title is a bit sensationalistic (probably intended to sell more books). As Cornwell clearly states, Pacelli was no friend of Hitler's. It's easy to sit in our armchairs 50 years later and second-guess what he should have done during the war, but I don't think anyone is entitled to demand someone else's martyrdom. Surrounded by Fascist Italy, and with at least one Nazi plot to kidnap him, one can hardly blame Pacelli for not coming down on the side of the Allies. I think there's room to give him the benefit of the doubt (which Cornwell, alas doesn't) that he felt that maintaining neutrality was the best strategy (for both the papacy and the world), and sincerely believed what he said, that protests would have caused more harm than good in the long run.

Being not Catholic or Jewish, this book opened my eyes to this side of WWII I never knew. Well documented and researached work which portrays the papacy movement to ultimate, unchecked power which had massive consequences when coupled with the Nazi uprising. You can feel the author's respect for his church and the pain he feels in presenting a true and accurate picture of what occurred based on his findings in primary and secondary historical sources. So revealing was the anti-Semitism within the Vatican for years and Pacelli's political maneuvering to look so moral and compassionate to all peoples when all the while his silence meant so horrible a fate to thousands.

This book is definitely worth the read. I love all of the characters, their quirkiness, loyalty to one another and the story line. You know Luke has a crush on one our Keenestonites, so I like the brief glimpse of that. I've read, literally, every single one of Kathleen Brooks books. This is just adding to my "ooh, that's good" list. These are also quick releases, so we don't have to wait too long for the final book in this series.

Moonshine and Malice is an excellent next installment of the Moonshine Hollow series. We catch up with Zoey as she continues to master her powers which she stumbled upon in Moonshine & Murder. In Moonshine & Malice we learn more of the history of the magical side of the characters, and the biggest question we all had from Murder -Who is Slade?- is answered.Kathleen Brooks excels at writing small town romances, and adding a touch of paranormal to this small town makes perfect sense. The Moonshine Hollow Series has been a great quick escape into the realm of possibilities.

This s book 2 of the series and it s amazing, this book, will grab you from, the start and leave you wanting more I could not put it down. I can't wait for book 3In this book Zoey learns more about and how to use her powers, and she and Slade enter a new relationship and of course you have Vilma and Agnes and the town it is a definite must read

Just finished Moonshine Hollow #2! I love the way this storyline is developing. Especially after first meeting the odd little town in Forever Hunted, and keeping it in mind through Luke Tanner’s several quick appearances in subsequent Forever Bluegrass stories. I don’t know how I’ll make it to April 16, when MH#3 will get here!

I just want to keep reading. It was over way to quick. This series is a departure from her other series but it is just as good, maybe even better. Wonderfully crafted characters draw you into Moonshine Hollow. I love everything about it. You will never be able to put it down!

Kathleen has such a good imagination. This book is completely different from the Kentucky books, but there will be a little merging of the story line. The Hollar is in East Tennessee, so we will see some more geography. Maybe a quick trip to Keeneland in the future.

The author's new novella trilogy is a definite departure from her past works and does not disappoint. The characters are fun. Looking forward to the last installment next month and possibly revisit during crossovers with our Keeneston crowd when Ava visits Luke.

Kathleen Brooks has created another great series! I was immediately sucked into the story. I am in love with the small town of Moonshine Hollow and its characters. I know there are only three books set in this series but I am definitely hoping for more! I think Kathleen has struck gold with this series!
