This free book from Amazon was a look at serial killer couple, Rose and Fred West, whose dozen (or possibly more?) victims finally received justice for their brutal deaths. The book was light on details, alluding to BDSM, rape, and dismemberment, but the events were watered down so most people could read the book without too much trouble. I was disappointed in the author's personal opinions and queries to the reader, instead of keeping to known facts and police reports. A good free read if you know nothing about the murders, but I have no idea how this reached "Best Seller" status, the writing was average, and the events felt pulled form headlines rather than researched.

This book was very intense, and I can't say that I actually "enjoyed" reading it. However, once I started it, I couldn't put it down! The fact that this could happen in relatively modern times (1960's, 70's and 80's) is overwhelming.

Very informative. Well written. I enjoyed reading this as I have watched crime show about this couple. The book gives more details and insight into their lives and more about what could have caused why they did what they did. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys true crime stories.

Totally shocking that this Despicable couple fooled the Authorities for so long... It also is a testimonial to what physiological and psychological damage our parental upbringing environment can do to the children involved and why social services are so important but oftimes so over looked.. Social services should leagaly be able to dig deeper or futher evaluate reports of negligence or abuse... I also agree with a other review that I would love to know what happened with the children in their own adult life...Expertly written acount of a story that did not get the national attention it deserved ...

This duo was definitely not the "Beaver" family. They were an evil, sadistic couple who would have kept killing if they hadn't been caught. I have read books about this couple before, but I enjoyed this one much more.Ryan really does engulf you in his book and you become captivated. I can't wait to read more of his stuff

I just finished this powerful book. The writing was excellent. I am an avid reader and enjoy mysteries very much. Knowing that this was a true story was extremely disturbing. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 rating was for this reason. Kudos to Ryan Green

This book shows us that monsters are real and evil walks on this earth. I read this book in a very short time, as horrible as these people were I couldn't put the book down wanting to see if they paid for their crimes

Boring book. Author needed to do better research. Looks to me like he just made up a story from reading old newspaper articles.

I have read extensively about Edgar Cayce, and have done considerable study of his readings. This book provides a service in that it offers far more facts about Cayce's life. The authors, husband and wife, were allowed access to all the documents related to Edgar Cayce. But ... what filled me with hope and inspiration and joy in Sugrue's rendering of Cayce's life is entirely lacking here. Sugrue's book is a spiritual journey, and one grows through reading it. Sugrue knew Cayce intimately, he knew all his family and associates, and his biography was actually guided by readings Cayce did for the book. Kirkpatrick's book is a compilation of facts, written in a most ordinary narrative, devoid of the inspiration held within Cayces' life. Cayce deserves a better definitive biography. There is a vast difference between facts and inspiration!

I first started reading books about Edgar Cayce back the early 1970's starting with "There Is A River", by Thomas Sugrue. Of the many I've read since then, which were all very good, "Edgar Cayce: An American Prophet" is the best one of all, because of it's honest sharing of both Cayce's amazing gifts & accomplishments; but, also his fallacies & miscommunications that occurred between himself, family members, friends and business associates. Kirkpatrick's expose of Cayce's life shows us who Edgar Cayce truly was, in a more complete way than any other book written about him before. One can only come away with a deeper empathy, love & respect for who this man was, and what he accomplished towards awakening countless numbers of people to timeless & profound spiritual truths during his lifetime, and still ongoing through the continued work of "The Association for Research & Enlightenment'. I am so thankful that Reverend Kev O'Kane whom I met at the A.R.E. Center in NY City, recommended this book to me. Whether you've read books about Cayce before or not, this one is a must for anyone who wants to get a more intimate understanding of the remarkable man he truly was, as well as, an intimate understanding of those closest to him who played a key role in his life.

This is an excellent book on Cayce - very well researched, well-written. I was shocked by Cayce's choices in life, how he apparently abandoned his wife and children for long periods of time, the way he ignored his second son's poor health and didn't perform one of his "miraculous" medical readings for the infant, who died at the age of two months. Cayce carried his bible everywhere and read it everyday, but I have to wonder about his comprehension of the writing therein considering the suffering he caused his family. Also, I was saddened by his lack of follow through on advice given to him by "the Source" throughout his life. He seemed to drift through most of his life, following the advice of false friends, sinking his money into speculative schemes, losing money hand-over-fist. His medical readings were so obscure that most of them weren't even attempted, so who knows how accurate they were. His life readings for friends linked them all to historical figures - what a coincidence. He was very naïve, easily manipulated. His family lived in destitution, malnourished, until he finally found a benefactor who set them up in Virginia Beach - providing them with food, shelter, and a way to make an income. Even though Cayce was a talented photographer and earned a good income from that talent, he foundered as a businessman and lost everything more than once. His life story calls to mind "Black Elk Speaks." Black Elk said that he was flawed in that he didn't understand the messages he received through his dreams, and misinterpreted the information he was given for his people. I see the same thing in Edgar Cayce.I like this book so much in that it isn't idol worship. It paints a picture of a human being with all of his flaws, in his triumphs and failures. I was filled with a real appreciation for his apparent abilities, when in a hypnotic trance, to see into other people's health issues. He apparently was responsible for several rather miraculous healing incidents. His "Source" seemed to provide new insights into various spiritual beliefs. It espoused a belief in reincarnation, Akashic Records, other life forms, and many controversial theories. Despite the fact that he was often referred to in the press of his day as an illiterate man, Cayce was exposed to a variety of books while employed as a bookseller and was exposed to many of the basic philosophies of his time, such as Transcendentalism and Spiritualism. He was never proven to be a fraud, even though he was an acquaintance of Harry Houdini, a great investigator into fraudulent mediums.

As was the life and work of Edgar Cayce, this book is a real gift. I wouldn't call myself an avid reader, especially of long books, yet found myself absolutely riveted by this one. Kirkpatrick is a truly gifted writer and Edgar Cayce's life is so incredibly phenomenal and inspiring, that I was completely spell bound for days.I very much appreciated how obviously well researched this book was, as that definitely made everything presented more credible for me. And the rich historical context in which Cayce's life was conveyed gave me a true sense of going back in time which I surprisingly very much enjoyed. I also really liked how three dimensional and real the people were depicted, including Cayce, a man who had strengths and challenges on the personality level, like we all do. Thankfully this is not an idealized version of his life. The fact that Source emerged and then went on to communicate all that was mind blowingly relayed to others, within that historical time period, is truly remarkable, and in many respects would still be the case even today, that's how extraordinary the information was and is. I am a seeker and student of several mind-body-spirit disciplines. Source answered some burning questions I've had for years, from the physical to the spiritual. And through Kirkpatrick, an extremely rich and meaningful tapestry of our great unfolding was woven for me, for which I am most grateful.Furthermore, Kirkpatrick's straightforward, clear, "in plain English" little explanations throughout, of the information given by Source, made the readings accessible and understandable to me in a way and to an extent that they hadn't quite been before. Just as Cayce was a truly remarkable human being, Kirkpatrick is a remarkable author and this is an outstanding book, one of the best I've ever read.

I was going to Uruguay for Christmas, to meet some family-in-law and of course to visit the country for the first time. Even if I was staying with some local people, I thought that I guide book won't hurt to have more readable info about the country. So I searched, searched and searched, looking for a book-guide of Uruguay, but all of them (written in english) were as part of Argentina or South America. Except for this one. Some comments complained about not being up to date, specially on the prices, but considering that the country has changed so much in the last 5-7 years, specially economically, I think that is normal. Because it happens with any other guide. So, I used it as guide book, not like a last-min written on stone practical info.I found the book very informative about all the history of Uruguay, and confirmed a lot of things that I heard from the people around me, and I even thought them some to the locals!! The country is small by itself, although there is still plenty of things to see for 2-3 weeks. The book covers all the regions, not just the touristic ones. Maps are reliable and in a reasonable amount to cover the important bits. Sometimes you will find that there is not much written about a place, but it's just because there is not much in there! Uruguay is a relative young, small country and half of it is focus on Montevideo, however I'm glad I found a book exclusively for "el paisito", cause it absolutely does deserve one!!

I bought this book as a gift for my husband. He was estatic! The picture capture the gauchos that live there. The culture description was exact and the history was more informative than he realized. He can't wait to share with his family. He and is family are from Uruguay and he was a vision of the country that he loves. He asked me how I found the book. I explained I read reviews from Amazon and the review for this book captured my attention as well as the ability to read parts on Amazon.Perfect book from anyone who wants to visit or just for those Uruguayans who want a real story about their beautiful country.

Just like others before me stated this is the one and only book about Uruguay that gives a helping hand to the "everyday" tourist. Not just about Montevideo and Punta del Este, but the entire country. So far it has been extremely helpful to me to put my plans together.I will be traveling there in April, so after the trip I will give an update on how helpful this book really was.UPDATE: I spent 3 unforgettable weeks (April 15 - May 6, 2013)in Uruguay traveling the entire country. My friends had travel books they'd brought with them from Europe, however, at the end of the day this book proved to be the most helpful with its small individual maps of every major town. I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting beautiful Uruguay for the first time.

This is basically the only guide book on Uruguay. I appreciated much of the wisdom shared by the authors but most of the suggested restaurants and attractions do not exist anymore. I also didn't appreciate the associations it made with residents of African descent and lack of safety. The only time I've experienced violence in Uruguay was from two white teens in one of the book's 'safe' neighborhoods.

Ever since returning from living for two years in this wonderful South American country, I have been looking for a book to take me back. Even though this brand new travel guide has almost as much information in it about Argentina as it does Uruguay, it is the first definitive book ever published about the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. It is detailed enough to explore the changes that have occurred in the towns where I lived 35 years ago and esoteric enough to relive those days without going back.If you are looking for a very good book about Uruguay or an excellent guide to help plan a trip to Uruguay's main tourist destinations (Montevideo, Colonia, Punta del Este, etc.) or the Buenos Aires area of Argentina across the Rio de la Plata, you can't go wrong with this well written, enjoyable guide. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to know more about Uruguay.

Just used this book on my recent trip to Uruguay. While I found it informative, it had some inaccuracies that, while perhaps time dependent, were really frustrating. One rule is that if there is something in this book listed as a great bargain, assume it will be double or more the cost listed in the book. I encountered this multiple occasions. And its definitely not exchange rate related. Also, make sure you take tons of cash, because the ATM situation in Uruguay is really horrible for foriegn travellers.

Basically the only Uruguay travel book out there, great overview of travelling in this interesting country

This is a good guidebook for Uruguay and about the only one to be found too. It is not the easiest guidebook I have ever purchased, but it has the details I was looking for.

There are some really nice pieces in this book: the anecdote titled One bad edge, for example, about screwing up at exactly the wrong time and the feeling of helplessness and doom that accompanies the moment; many of the bits about playing in Serbia; the bit about minor league salaries (which the author has also excerpted as a blog post); the excellent description of the minor league coach; 24 hours in the life of a minor leaguer; the section about bad habits in the minors; the section about going on the IR; and the very best section, Requiem for a Hockey Dream, about the descent into painkillers and booze after surgery.Unfortunately, these gems are hidden among an almost unbroken stream of anecdotes about juvenile pranks, drinking, drinking games, and just generally childish and boorish behavior. There’s just way too much of this stuff cluttering up the book. It’s embarrassing. I’m sure McKinven would say: but that’s how it was – that’s how it is! So what? You don’t have to dwell endlessly on all of that juvenile stuff. Give a few examples, such as the ones in the section on bad habits, admit that it was an awful, embarrassing way to behave (especially that incident with the elderly couple in their Serbian apartment building) and let it go. Write more about the hockey. Give more detail about the games, practices, coaches and money in Serbia. Go with the strengths – don’t spend 50% of the book regaling us with tales of the juvenile stuff. The first third of the book, about playing at Clarkson U, was just chockablock with boring Slapshot-style anecdotes, pranks and drinking. What a waste. And he never drops that horrible sports-talk habit of referring to drinks as ‘pops’: “The boys like to cut loose and have a few pops.” Sheesh. There’s actually a good bit about the connection between hockey and alcohol in the section on bad habits, and a great bit on the over-reliance on pain medication in Requiem for a Hockey Dream – that’s the level of writing that would make this a really good book, but too often McKinven just drops back to rely on tired, frat-boy-style anecdotes. And he leaves the part about the painkillers till the point where many people have probably ceased to read. Ditto the part about being a healthy scratch – that was a great piece about his university hockey, much better than all of the drinking-and-pranks stuff, but it doesn’t start until the 85% mark! And the very ending – pretty weak sauce: he’s writing about a legendary minor league trainer, and you turn the page and it’s over. Nothing about his final day, final cut, what comes after, summing up, or anything. An anecdote about Gunner, the grumpy, chirping, spandex-clad trainer and then nothing. So there’s a good book hidden in here, and if you stick with it, you can find the gems. And maybe I’m being a bit too harsh: he’s primarily a skater, after all, not a writer. Anyway, I’m glad I read the whole book, as some of the most revealing stuff comes in the last 30%. I’m going to purchase his other book about what it takes to get a kid all the way to pro – I’m sure he has some good points in there too.

I got this book for myself, as I am a lifelong fan of minor league hockey and stories or perspectives I can get from a player in the lower leagues is always way more interesting and fun than hearing from a player who flew right into the NHL from college. The book didn't disappoint, Jamie's stories are hilarious as well educational since his career spanned quite a few different leagues as well as different countries. From funny cultural clashes to good, old fashioned pranks from teammates, everyone is sure find something that will make them laugh. His perspective on the behind the scenes type of stuff that happens in the game is also very revealing and gritty when discussing the drug abuse that unfortunately happens and the politics that factor what happens to a player based on his performance and other matters.I would recommend this book to anyone that loves the sport of hockey and wants to learn more about the game and the politics that go on around it concerning the players. It's also great just to read for the fun stories he recounts as it is titled "Tales From The Bus Leagues" after all. You don't have to be a fan of the minor leagues to want to read this or appreciate it as there's something for everyone in this book. If I had to name a flaw I'd say I just wish it was longer as the guy is a great storyteller and I can only imagine he's only touched the tip of the iceberg with what he has experienced compared to what is in the book.

Great stories. As a supporter of a former UHL team- Rockford IceHogs- I got to meet a lot of those players. They were way more accessible than the NHL or even AHL pros. They were down to earth, fun guys doing what they loved while chasing the dream of going to the big leagues. As a beer league player, I admired these guys. I would've loved to go on the busses and see different places. These stories tell exactly what it's like to play like that. After reading this, I admire these guys even more, and am glad I support any of the minor leagues I get to see. I only wish the book was longer!

I am an adult hockey player. I found this book to be exactly as I expected it to be. Nothing more, nothing less. I read a few hockey books a month. If you truly love the game, it's an easy read.

Not exactly a treatise on the finer points of the game, but it was entertaining none the less. Good for a quick weekend read.

Just okay. Seems like it's been a very long time since anyone's written a book about minor league hockey that's more than just okay. Sigh.

Great look at life in the minor leagues. You have to get use to his going back and forth in time throughout the book but it is a good read.

Kind of like grandpa telling stories that overlap and repeat information. Good view into the hockey life though. It's okay.

You know how people sometimes get tattoos of phrases from their favorite books? Well I want to get the entire text of 180 Seconds on my skin. 180 Seconds is the kind of book that after you read it, you realize how lackluster every other supposed five-star book you've ever read has been. You think you've read ugly cry books? This book had me sobbing for pages, my body heaving I was crying so hard. Jessica Park weaves magic in between the pages of everything she writes, but this book, this book made my heart bleed."One hundred and sixty seconds. We are engaged in a form of intimacy that scares the absolute h*ll out of me. It’s as if there is a weight on my chest that I want to shove off, and I’ve never been this terrified before.Or this whole and hopeful and connected. My body starts to tremble. I want more of what I’m feeling, and I also want none of it."The catalyst for the story is similar to a video you may have seen floating around social media that featured performance artist Marina Abramovic who sat at a table one minute at a time in complete silence with total strangers. The performance takes an emotional turn when the lover that she had not seen for over 20 years shows up across from her. In Park's story, Allison is a jaded foster kid who was adopted late in life. The story starts at the beginning of her third year of college where she continues to excel at keeping everyone at a distance. Until she accidentally stumbles upon a social experiment. Esben is well known on campus and on social media as someone who finds the good in people. His friendly, open demeanor is a complete contrast to Allison's closed off nature. Walking back to campus Allison unexpectedly finds herself taking part in one of Esben's experiments - the two sit across from each other in total silence while maintaining eye contact for 180 seconds. Reading this description it may be hard to believe those 180 seconds would have such a profound effect on Allison and Esben, but Park's description of how the pair reacts to each moment will make you feel like you're the one sitting in the chair. After the experiment, Allison and Esben try to figure out what the experience meant to one another. It sounds simple, but their journey is a beautiful push and pull of letting yourself become open to the idea of love as well as the constant struggle to find the good in people."Just say that you love me. Please. Because I am so god**mn in love with you that I can hardly breathe when we’re apart."I loved this book for so many reasons, but one of the emotional triggers for me was the ache Allison had to be loved. As someone who was adopted when she was "sixteen and a half" Allison struggles to let anyone in, including her father, Simon. The only true friend she has is Steffi, a fellow foster kid who Allison considers a sister. Besides these two people, Allison has convinced herself that she is fine without anyone else in her life and that she enjoys being alone instead of being bothered by stereotypical college idiots. As I was reading I could totally relate to Allison. I'm an introvert and I'd much rather stay at home than be invited to a party, or read a book instead of a girls night. Right? As a military spouse, I move around so much that it's hard to make friends, but that doesn't bother me. At least I tell myself that it doesn't. As I continued on reading there is a pivotal moment in the book when Allison is faced with the decision to open herself up to making new friendships or continue isolating herself. She sits in her bed and weeps at what she has become and truthfully recognizes she doesn't want to be alone. The whole scene is maybe a page and a half, but I felt it to my core. How easy is it for us to lie or have a sarcastic comment when we see other people having fun instead of being honest and acknowledging we crave those same connections. Yes, there are times when I would truly rather sit in my pajamas on the couch and binge watch The 100 on Netflix rather than go to a bar. But there have also been many times when I've been jealous of people who seem to make friendships so easily while I sit in a restaurant alone. It's a testament to the author's writing that she can not only make you connect so deeply with the characters but that her words make you reflect on your own life."I cannot stop the tears. 'I don’t want to live like this,' I say out loud over and over through my sobbing. I cry for who I have been, who I am, and who I could be."There are so many things I loved about this book. I could honestly pick it apart and analyze it for days. There wasn't one moment I didn't fall in love with the characters or the writing. 180 Seconds is one of the best books I have ever read, and its message has resonated deeply. There isn't one person that wouldn't benefit from reading this book. It's perfect.

DNF 38%I know… I’m in the minority here. This read childish to me. Very lackluster. This is an easy book to read and if you’re looking for something simple and light, this might work for you. I, however, am not looking for something like this. I like books that reel me in with powerful emotions, intense situations, and realistic reactions. This was not that. With what I read, the story line seemed to have a great concept. I was intrigued before I bought it. Now that I have it, I just feel let down. There was potential though. Maybe Colleen Hoover should have done this. I feel the narration wouldn’t have been so “woe-is-me” and the characters would have been more believable – they were supposed to be junior year college students for Pete’s sake.I could not connect with Allison at all. I found her to be a extraordinarily weak leading character. She seems strong and determined one second with a glare that could kill, then the next she’s a broken thing trying to keep people away because she’s afraid of people leaving, then the next she drunk to tell him he’s a meany. The threads that made up this character did not blend well for me. She was my biggest problem. She wallows in self pity and anxiety, and it was so hard to not get frustrated with her. And since the book is about her, well, here we are.Situations in this book felt overly dramatic, but not detailed for the drama. It felt like the author couldn’t explain these situations. She not once made me feel a damn thing for them. I want emotions spilling off the page, and it seemed that all this author could give me were cheesy lines that no one says in real life. NO ONE.I’m not going to waste my time on a book I don’t like, hence the DNF. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

I wasn't expecting this to be YA fiction. Still, I liked the book; the story itself was awesome. I would have preferred it to be told in a subtler manner, in more adult tones, but that would have made this book very long and definitely out of the YA fiction genre.I personally know people who were abandoned at birth, grew up alone, and had to learn to trust in a world that is not always worthy of trust. Most people ARE good, most the time. It only takes one hateful person to destroy a sense of safety...those who saw too much ugliness and were on their own from day one--I applaud their courage for letting anyone in, ever.Pairing that message with social media of today was really cool. This was explained and handed to us instead of letting we readers come to the conclusion ourselves. The characters were a bit much, at times unbelievable. The good guys were so good. Things seemed to go too well, too much smooth sailing on what in real life are very choppy waters. Like an after school special. Lifetime channel.Very good narration, the voice of the main character was right on with the main character's personality. She didn't do men's voices very well, but I thought they sounded the way a young woman the main characters age would hear them.If you enjoy young adult fiction this is a great book. I wasn't expecting it to fit that genre, but still, I enjoyed the book.

Amazon.com Review

This little book fits in a pocket or purse for inspiration and information while you follow the New Beverly Hills Diet. To help you stick to the 35-day weight-loss diet, author Judy Mazel offers tips, affirmations, and even songs for each of those 35 days. (Sing this one to the tune of "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing": "Thin is a many splendored thing! When your hipbones show, your cheeks will glow, and your heart will sing!") There are tidbits of information about meditation, yoga, fruit selection, and digestion. "Reading a Restaurant Menu Through the Eyes of a Born-Again Skinny" is a quick reference list of menu items for figuring out how to order a protein or carbohydrate meal in a restaurant without mixing the two. Mazel also includes pointers on sticking to your diet while attending a party, and interactive pages for you to list daily weight, favorite foods, your "proud sheet," what you hate about being fat, and "what's so great about being thin."

If you don't have it later, you can have it tomorrow. Nothing is leaving the planet. Golden Rules1. Weigh yourself every day, no matter what. 2. Fruit. Start almost every day of your life with fruit. Once you have eaten something other than fruit in the course of the day, never, never ever go back to eating fruit.Fruit digests almost instantly. Before you can even finish eating a pineapple, its nutrients are being absorbed by your body. If it is inhibited in its digestion, if it is eaten after anything else, it gets trapped in your stomach by other foods. Its explosive enzyme action will be offset by bloating and gas. Your savior will be transformed into your tormentor. 3. The waiting time. When you go from one fruit to another fruit, wait one hour. When you go from one food group to another food group, wait two hours minimum (three would be better). These are the minimum waiting times—the shortest periods of time you can get away with without running the risk of fat. Remember, you gain weight because food is not efficiently digested. In simpler terms, if food doesn't leave your stomach when it should, if it becomes trapped or held up by other antagonistic foods, the nutrients it should generate will not be properly processed by your body and you'll gain weight. 4. Protein. Once you've eaten protein, even one little bite, at least 80 percent of what you eat for the remainder of the day should be protein. Modifying the PlanCritical to achieving maximum weight loss is following the program exactly. You can expect a 10- to 15-pound weight loss in 35 days. Unlike a typical 'diet,' on this program you lose weight not by starving your body, but by feeding it. Food and eating are what will get you thin, and keep you thin. Eating the specific foods in the order listed is also vital, so please do not deviate. There are some allowable substitutions (see 'Substitute Food List') just in case you're allergic to a specific food or there's something on the diet you really, really hate. However, because each food has a definite purpose, substitute only if you must. . . . Unless, of course, you want to modify. No problem, particularly if you have just a few pounds to lose or are simply trying to maintain your weight. It's permitted, it's acceptable and it's easy. Simply begin your day with the scheduled fruit, eat enough of it so that you are really full, wait two hours, and then eat whatever you would normally eat. That doesn't mean 'pig out' or go crazy; likewise, it doesn't mean to starve yourself either. If you want to do two-thirds of the day my way and then do your own thing, that's also fine. Even throwing in an occasional whole day my way is also great. Just follow the program in the right daily order, being sure to read each daily chapter.Even if you are modifying the plan, it is still important to weigh yourself every day and, I repeat, to read your daily chapter, as it will further reinforce my technique and its unconscious adaptation to your lifestyle and your favorite foods. If you follow these instructions, you'll see, it won't be long before doing things my way will become your way as well. Even if you have a lot of weight to lose, you can still follow the modified plan, but I don't really recommend it. These initial 35 days will be the best thing that ever happened to you. You may think you can't do it, but, trust me, I think you can. But then again, you know you better than I do. So if you feel you must modify, then modify. It's better than not doing at all. P.S. If you haven't already read The New Beverly Hills Diet or listened to the audiocassettes, I strongly suggest you do in order to fully understand the technical aspects of Conscious Combining. Now give me your hand, you little Skinny, and I'll lead you out of the Valley of the Shadow of Fat, and together we'll revel in the land of hipbones. From Publishers Weekly

This updated edition (a chapter on gay and lesbian teenagers and the ramifications of the electronic world have been added) will be as useful to parents as the 1992 version. Wolf, a clinical psychologist who works with adolescents (Why Did You Have to Get a Divorce? And When Can I Get a Hamster?), clearly has a feel for both the angst of young people who must deal with an evermore complex world and the difficulties parents face when a cooperative loving child morphs into a teenager who lies, talks back and avoids parental company. Humorous and insightful, Wolf describes what is, rather than what mothers and fathers of rebellious and thoughtless adolescents wish would be. He is forthright in stating that "you do not win the battle for control with teenagers... usually the best you get is imperfect control." Despite the best efforts of parents, today's adolescents frequently drink, experiment with drugs and are sexually active. According to the author, however, it is still important to have rules even though a teenager may break them. If parents clearly state their expectations of behavior and restate them when a teen disobeys, their son or daughter will, to some extent, internalize the rules and abide by them sometimes. In addition to providing excellent advice on particular situations, including divorce, school problems and stepparenting, he makes the often obnoxious manner in which teens communicate with their parents understandable as a rite of passage that they will eventually outgrow.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

This book, "Get Out of My Life," by Anthony Wolf, Ph.D., was written for my teen generation originally, but wow --- is this applicable today. There are some extremely important tips here that I did not know (and I've tried to read a lot of parenting books) that will help you survive your child's teen years. For me, the most important tips are...1. Your child's teen behaviors are truly a phase. They really do have to break away from you -- both physically and in their own internal psychology -- and that means rejecting everything about you, including your physical presence and everything you do or say. In order to become themselves, they have to become "Not You."2. You do have a right and maybe even an obligation to be a confident, decision-making, parent. It makes sense that everyone should know what the boundaries are and that you should state them; it's only fair. That means that although your teen's tumultuous behavior has probably thrown you for a bit of a loop, you still are "The Decider." You need to be careful to choose your (a limited number of) battles, as you cannot physically control your child's every move, obviously: Nor would you want to. Also, realize that for any limit or rule that exists or is stated at all, your teen will feel immediately personally persecuted and evilly-controlled, as if you were suggesting that he be chained in the basement, rather than put his dirty dishes in the sink. So, choose a very limited set of "limits" or boundaries. The best way to get through this time is to decide what you think is best, state it once, listen to the child argue, and restate that the decision is made, and walk away.3. Your child is arguing partly because he is not ready to wrestle with his own internal conscience and maturation steps. As long as he can blame you, he doesn't have to take responsibility for acting/becoming grown-up himself. This part comes with very helpful warnings that your teen will try to "trap" you into protracted conflict with him ("You don't really care about me," etc): Don't take the bait. Do follow up later if a specific issue is concerning.4. When the teen makes a mistake and oversteps your or other given boundaries, confront him. Tell the teen that he has overstepped the boundary X and that it is not OK. Say, "We still do have boundary X." Walk away. You can impose a short restriction of some kind, but this would be fairly rare.5. Do not continue to engage in protracted conflicts and arguing. It can lead to the teen running away and further souring. Therefore, validate your teen's feelings, briefly state yours, and try to stop the arguing by saying, "I see," "I understand how you feel that way," and "We can talk more later, I have to go," and then actually leave in order to stop the yell-fest.6. The author feels that providing for the child is not contingent upon good behavior. I agree that the quid-pro-quo approach does not work. If the teen tells you to "F-off," and then asks you to drive him to the mall, you can tell him what you really think about that; however, with some time that's past, forgive and forget and just do things for them they don't actually deserve, per se, but you feel every child should have anyway. Remember, you are modeling patience and mature charity (of a saint).7. Your child's grades could slip badly, which will seriously limit his future. Dr. Wolf says you could do a few things here: You could ignore it and let the school handle it, you could try to save your kid and do things for him, or you could stand over him, managing him, for an hour a day until his homework is done. I agree that saving your kid will not benefit him. Dr. Wolf suggests standing over him for homework every day. I don't think I can implement this anymore, however. I think my kids are just going to have to do a lot of repair work after their teen years are through to try to catch up to their dreams and goals, unfortunately.8. Tell your teen that unprotected sex, drugs, and drinking is bad for them and illegal and tell him that if he is ever in a situation, however, he can call and you will pick him up, no questions asked. You just want him to be safe.9. One of the best parts about this book is that the dialogue could be lifted straight out of our home. This is shocking. I think the worst I'd ever said to my mother as a teen was "back off!" LOL. It is hard to believe that a teen saying these things could in any way be "normal." Dr. Wolf shows that it is. Audible sigh of relief!10. Last, I don't think this is really stated in this book, but I think it is implicit: Show and say things that make your teen feel that you are interested in his life and care about him. That means showing up to his events (but, you do not need to be seen by his friends!), providing helpful material items, asking him "how it's going," and stating appreciation for every good thing he does. What do you think of modern parenting (and this book)?

I chose this rating because this book clearly and concisely explained the dilemma faced by today's parents in raising teenagers in the electronic age. Many problems that I faced rearing my children remain, but many more challenges await today's parents trying to get through the adolescence of their children. This book gives one encouragement, that ,yes, you WILL get through this stage of your child's development. With clear language and humor, the author let's the reader know that he has walked a mile in your shoes. So glad I stumbled across this book. My 16 year old grandson will definitely benefit from my new enlightenment. Thank you!

This is the best book on the market and I read quite a few of them. You will understand what is going on in your teenagers mind. But that is not what makes this book special. What does is that it is written in a way that you can logically and empathetically make the connection to your own child. All of a sudden their miserable and odd behavior makes sense.Without that book I would have consumed twice as much wine, pulled more hair outs, and yelled much, much more.A must have. Don't think - order and read. Seriously.

I see many exasperated parents in my psychotherapy practice; many of them think their kids are beyond help. I have them read this book to help them to understand that it is not just their kids...it is EVERYBODY'S kids! No, I don't mean all kids need psychiatric help; far from it. We parents sometimes need to be reminded why kids do what they do, and why we, as parents, respond the way we do. This book lays all of that out using great stories that are compelling and humorous. And it reminds us that sometimes we just need to sit back, take a deep breath, and understand that "this, too shall pass." If you are looking to figure out why your teenager does what he/she does, read this.

Struggling with understanding your teenager...their moods, the hurtful words and constant eyerolling..this book helps you to regain control of what you truly thought you had no control of. It will help you find your sanity again. This book will definitely help you know you are not alone and how to change the way you handle their emotionally difficult ways of thinking..so no one breaks down

Every parent of about to be teen-age daughters should read this. So helpful in understanding that most difficult time oflife for pre-teen and teenage girls. Not only does it help both men and women to understand, it gives real life suggestionsabout how to deal and cope with the typical situations and challenges girls face. If you are considering buying this I imploreyou to. YOU MUST READ THIS!!Just for any conspiracy types, I have no relationship with the author, printer, typesetter, seller or anyone else who might havea financial interest in boosting sales. What I wrote above is from the heart!! Really!!

Every parent of a teen or soon to be teen should read this book. I’m so glad it was recommended to me when my oldest was a teenager. This book kept me laughing which made it enjoyable to read but it also gave me some much needed perspective. This book had a profound impact on me and as a result, I lend or buy it for friends who are struggling with their own teens.

I was having a hard time with my teenage daughter and began to take it personally. After reading this book I realized we were no different than anyone else raising a teen. It teaches you how to pick your battles, when to focus on something or let it go. Raising teens is tough, but this book makes it a little less daunting.
