Stephen King is one of the most famous authors in America for a reason. With Insomnia, King offers up an excellent fantasy story for his fans.Insomnia focuses on Ralph Roberts, a seventy year old retiree whose wife recently died of cancer. Through the story, Ralph deals with three main plots. The first is is battle with Insomnia and old age, which are hurting his ability to function in life. The second is helping Helen Deepneau, whose husband abuses her. And the third, stopping a plot to kill hundreds of Derry citizens dreamed up by an ancient evil. Yes, it's that type of story.King has always been great at writing characters. With 800 pages to work with, Ralph Roberts becomes an impressively fleshed out individual who you root for throughout the story. While the plot can be slow at in the first half before the real 'horror' starts to happen, this character work can easily see you through. Overall, the plot is engaging, particularly for fans of King's 'Dark Tower' series. You won't regret buying this book.

How did I miss this one? I know...I'm very late to the "Insomnia" party. I lost touch with SK for awhile in the 90s and early aughts. I've had to go back and discover the "Dark Tower" series along with several of his other works from that era. I'm glad to have finally found this one and was pleasantly surprised to discover the references to some of the "Dark Tower" lore. I found "Insomnia" very enjoyable. It was suspenseful and compelling but it also had deeply insightful moments of reflection and philosophizing. I read in several of the reviews that you had to "slog through" the first 150-200 pages or so before "Insomnia" really got going. I certainly do not agree. There is a slower burn to the build in this story than many of his "strap in and hold on" books, but I like that! I recently got around to "Desperation". It's a fun story, but the action was so immediate and breakneck that I never felt the characters really developed. The build to "The Stand" (one of my favorites from Mr. King) was a long, slow burn. Sure, it featured a world-destroying plague...but the slow and steady spread of the plague worked perfectly as a device to introduce and establish characters then set the scene for the post-apocalyptic battle to come. "Insomnia", in a much smaller setting, does the same thing. Sure, once the action catches hold and the hero's goals are in place, you'd better have your seatbelt firmly fastened. But I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Ralph and slowly descending into his altered plane of perception. He fully develops as a character, we understand what he's going through, how it changes him and why he is the perfect choice for his mission. I'm also a sucker for the follow-ups...and the follow-up to the follow-ups...once I become invested in a character, I want to know more! The coda and epilogue to this story is immensely compelling and a satisfying conclusion to Ralph's story arc.

This is my second time reading Insomnia. I read it the first time in 1994 and loved it then so I wanted to revisit it. I am so glad I did! If anything it is better the second time around. I loved the story line and that I could not quite figure out for sure what would happen next (22 years is a long time between reads). Ralph and Lois both touched my heart. I laughed, I cried, I was easily carried along with the book and didn't want it to end (again)! It is a little bit of home town life, a little bit of sci-fi, a tad of horror (depending how easy you scare) and it makes you wonder what might be coming next after we leave this world. I just may read it again in a few years!

I have read all of Stephen King. This one over 20 years ago. And I have to say it was better this time around. Maybe because I am older and can relate to Ralph better in my 40s than I did in my 20s. Maybe cause I completed the dark tower series and could relate to the reference s. Maybe both. But good book. Hope we hear more from Mr. King. Would love some spinoff to visit midworld again.

I read this one in two large chunks about 7 months apart. It's well known that King is an "intuition" writer (he doesn't plot or outline ahead of time) which when it works (11/22/63) allows him to create incredible works and when it doesn't (The Dark Half) leaves a steaming pile of disappointment. This book lies somewhere in the middle. An interesting story with a strong start, it carries on for way too long and gets a lot weirder than I would've liked. The main characters just suddenly seem to know things at the most convenient moment (e.g. how to use their new special powers, the abilities and psychology of mysterious characters, etc.) and a lot of the supernatural stuff goes unexplained. Still, there was enough of a mystery to keep me reading and the epilogue gives a satisfying sense of closure. This is another Derry novel so it ties in with lots of King's other works (The Dark Tower & IT mostly with a surprising nod to Pet Sematary) though it doesn't really build any of his mythology. It almost seems like he knew this one was floundering and decided to add some stuff the fans like to help get them through it. Published in 1994 this novel definitely belongs to the collection of weaker novels King wrote prior to the 1999 accident that almost ended his career. By no means a must-read, I'd only recommend if you're a completionist. Also, an important note about Penguin Publishing. I actually rated this book down a star because the Kindle version is RIDDLED WITH TYPOS. I usually do my best to identify/report typos but I was so overwhelmed with this one that I gave up--I don't feel like I should have to copy edit a book I paid for. I'd really like Penguin to offer a revised version of the book or refund my money.
